GAME RECAP

Jim Thome homered twice, including his first career grand slam, and drove in a career-high six runs and Chad Ogea allowed three runs over six innings as the Cleveland Indians continued their dominance over the Detroit Tigers with an 11-3 victory.

Thome had an RBI single in the first inning, a disputed solo homer, his 26th, in the third and capped Cleveland's scoring with a grand slam in the eighth. He recorded his third career two-homer game and fourth multi-homer performance. Thome's 27 round-trippers are the most by an Indians left-handed hitter since Boog Powell also blasted 27 in 1975.

"It was one of those days where everything worked out," Thome said. "To have a big day like that and to hit a grand slam like that is special. We played very well and I managed to hit the ball very hard (in the series)."

Ogea (7-4) gave up six hits and two walks with five strikeouts for just his second win in his last seven starts. He improved to 5-1 at home, but won there for the first time since July 7th against Chicago.

"I made a few mistakes in the sixth and it cost me a couple of runs," Ogea said. "I was physically getting tired but I didn't hit the wall. Now that I am pitching every fifth day, I get a second wind. It was exactly 24 curves because I looked at the chart. I knew coming out of the bullpen that I didn't have a great changeup today."

Paul Shuey pitched two hitless innings and Julian Tavarez worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the Indians, who improved to 9-0 overall against the Tigers this year and 18-1 all-time versus Detroit at Jacobs Field. Cleveland has won 27 of the last 32 meetings, dating back to the start of the 1994 season and recorded its fourth straight three-game home sweep of Detroit.

The Indians jumped on Brian Williams (3-10) for four runs in the first. Kenny Lofton led off with an infield single, stole second one out later and came home on a single by Thome. After Manny Ramirez doubled in a run and Albert Belle was hit by a pitch, Brian Giles hit a sacrifice fly and Alomar added a run-scoring single for a 4-0 lead.

Williams surrendered six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings to fall to 0-3 this year against Cleveland. He has won just one of his last eight starts, lasting less than five innings on five occasions.

Brad Ausmus' third home run in the third put Detroit on the board in the third inning, but Cleveland responded with two more runs in the bottom half. Thome led off with a homer down the left field line and Alomar singled in Ramirez two outs later to make it 6-1.

Thome's homer was originally called a double because of fan interference, but Indians manager Mike Hargrove argued the call and the call was reversed. Detroit manager Buddy Bell than contested the call, but to no avail.

The home run by Ausmus snapped a six-game homerless streak by Detroit, which has dropped seven games in a row after winning four straight and 10 of 12.

"I just think we disrespected this game in general and the game of baseball," Bell said. "We lost the first two games of this series and to be honest with you I don't think they gave a (bleep) about playing today. I think they wanted to go home and they really didn't give a (bleep) about it. I talked to them a little bit. If you think you can just throw your gloves on the field against the Cleveland, you are mistaken."

An RBI single by Ruben Sierra and a run-scoring groundout by Tony Clark in the sixth cut the gap to 6-3 before the Indians put the game away with five runs in the eighth off Gregg Olson, including the grand slam by Thome to deep right.

Ramirez collected a career-high three doubles while Thome had his first four-hit game. Thome went 7-for-11 with three homers and eight RBI in the three-game series and has hit in 13 of his last 14 contests, batting .469 with five homers and 19 RBI.
